Hip symptoms we assess and treat

FAI & groin pain

Deep groin pain, pinching with sitting, squatting or crossing the legs, and reduced hip movement associated with femoroacetabular impingement.

Lateral hip pain & bursitis

Pain over the outside of the hip, tenderness and night pain when lying on the affected side, often involving the gluteal tendons and bursa.

Stairs, walking & sport

Pain going upstairs, walking uphill, running or changing direction, with progressive rehabilitation matched to your daily and sporting goals.

Understanding your condition

FAI and hip impingement

FAI describes contact between the ball and socket of the hip in certain positions. The shape seen on a scan does not determine pain by itself, so we assess movement, strength and symptom behaviour before deciding what needs changing.

Trochanteric bursitis

Outer-hip pain is frequently driven by gluteal tendon overload, sometimes with irritation of the nearby bursa. Treatment avoids compressive positions initially, then builds hip strength and tolerance progressively.

Our approach to hip pain

  1. 01

    Differentiate

We examine the hip, back and surrounding muscles to identify whether pain is coming from the joint, outer-hip tendons, bursa or referred structures.

  2. 02

    Settle

Manual therapy and practical changes to sitting, stairs, sleep and training reduce irritation while keeping you active.

  3. 03

    Rebuild

Progressive exercise rehabilitation restores hip and gluteal strength. Focused shockwave may support persistent gluteal tendinopathy where appropriate.

Initial assessment £75 (45 min) · Assessment with diagnostic ultrasound scan £150 (60 min) · Follow-up treatment £60 (30 min).See full physiotherapy prices and our treatments in Oxford.

Common questions

Do I need a GP referral?
No. You can self-refer and book directly; no GP letter is needed.
Is hip impingement the same as hip bursitis?
No. FAI commonly causes deeper groin pain and pinching with hip flexion. Lateral hip pain, often called trochanteric bursitis, affects the tendons and bursa on the outside of the hip. We examine both patterns before treating.
Can you scan my hip?
Diagnostic ultrasound can assess the outer-hip tendons and bursa when clinically useful. Deeper joint structures may require MRI referral, which we can arrange directly.
Can physiotherapy help without surgery?
Often, yes. Improving hip strength, movement options and load management can reduce symptoms substantially. We will explain if a specialist opinion is appropriate.
