Ankle sprain symptoms we treat

Acute sprain & swelling

Pain, bruising and swelling after rolling the ankle, including difficulty weight-bearing and uncertainty about whether it is safe to walk.

Recurring instability

Ankles that repeatedly give way, feel unreliable on uneven ground or have never fully recovered after an earlier sprain.

Return to sport

Loss of balance, strength, speed or confidence when running, jumping and changing direction after an ankle injury.

Understanding your condition

Checking the severity

We assess ligament tenderness, swelling, movement, strength and weight-bearing. Clinical screening identifies whether imaging or medical review is needed rather than assuming every sprain is minor.

Preventing another sprain

Pain settling is only the first step. Calf strength, balance, hopping, landing and direction-change capacity must recover before return to sport to reduce the risk of re-injury.

From acute injury to confident movement

  1. 01

    Assess

We grade the likely ligament injury, screen for fracture and establish what you can safely load now.

  2. 02

    Restore

Manual therapy and progressive movement help recover ankle range, comfortable walking and calf strength.

  3. 03

    Return

Balance, hopping, agility and sport-specific tests guide a safe return and reduce recurring instability.

Common questions

When should I see a physiotherapist after an ankle sprain?
Early assessment is useful if swelling is marked, weight-bearing is difficult or the ankle feels unstable. We screen for signs that need an X-ray or medical review before starting rehabilitation.
How long does an ankle sprain take to recover?
A mild sprain may improve over two to four weeks; more significant ligament injuries often need six to twelve weeks. Your examination gives a clearer individual timescale.
Why does my ankle keep giving way?
Recurring instability can follow incomplete ligament healing, reduced balance, calf weakness or poor control during cutting and landing. Rehabilitation tests and retrains each of these.
Do I need a GP referral?
No. You can self-refer directly for assessment and treatment.
